The St. John's Water Dog, also called the St. Johnís Dog, was a
dog breed from
Little is known of the breeds that went into its creation. There may have been
"greater" and "lesser" versions.
This breed is the ancestor of the modern
Flat Coated Retriever,
Labrador Retriever, and the
The smaller Newfoundlands, which were exported from Canada to England, were
also known as St. John's dogs. These dogs were cross-bred with other breeds to
creat the Retrievers. The larger of these dogs evolved into the big and gentle
Newfoundlands as we know them today.
